17-year NHL veteran's career may be over after today's announcement

On Monday, according to Walt Ruff, the Hurricanes have released Halak from his professional tryout contract, making him an unrestricted free agent once again.

Halak, 38, was brought in by the Carolina Hurricanes on November 6th after the team announced Frederik Andersen would be out indefinitely with a medical issue. The Bratislava native never appeared in any games for the Hurricanes during his PTO.
In 25 games last season for the New York Rangers, Halak had a record of 10-9-5 with a 2.72 goals against average, a .903 save percentage and one shutout.
