That was the case for former 11th overall pick and Philadelphia Flyers prospect Samuel Morin. Recently on the Nasty Knuckles Podcast, he opened up about his decision to retire; take a look.
Morin says that at the time he chose to retire he has about 7 or 8 surgeries on his knee at and one point after one of his last ones, the doctors said he was good to skate and he hurt his knee a week or so later.
He continued by saying after his last surgery doctors said he was good to return by December and he wasn't sure he could go through all of it again, so for his mental health he thought it was best to walk away.
Morin, barely 28 revealed that he'll need a full knee replacement before long and that although his knee feels okay right now, the cartilage keeps peels away from his knee like an orange.
Some things in life are bigger than hockey, choosing to walk away while his knee could still be saved was most definitely the right call.
