Insider Believes He Knows The Number For Auston Matthews Extension

BY MATT    JULY 19, 2023  (3:23 PM)
Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has been hard at work trying to get two members of the core four locked up to long-term extensions as they enter the final year of their respective contracts.

The William Nylander negotiation appears to be at a standstill over the dollar value, the same can't be said with Toronto's top player Auston Matthews. Reports are saying a deal could be close.

Nick Kypreos was on the the Sportsnet 590 The Fan show and belies the AAV will be $13.5M on Matthews next deal.

"Everyone I've talked to says it's $13.5 AAV."

It is still undecided how many years the contract will be. Insiders believe it will be between three and five years.

While the 25 year old regressed from his 60 goal, 106 point season in 2021-2022, he still managed 40 goals and 85 points in 2022-2023. Matthews played with a nagging wrist injury for most of last season, which clearly hindered his ability to put the puck in the net. His signature wrist shot was not used nearly as much as previous seasons.

Matthews will soon be calling himself the most expensive player in the NHL along with the hardware he already owns in the the Rocket Richard Trophy, the Hart Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Trophy.
