Lighting GM Gives Surprising Answer When Asked When Star Player Will Get Extension

Tampa Bay Lightning captain and team backbone Steven Stamkos expressed disappointment today that he doesn't have a contract extension yet. He told reporters he expected one to be done over the summer, but there weren't even any talks. Bolts GM Julian Brisebois has now addressed the situation, and his answer has angered some fans.

"I need to see how this season plays out before I make those decisions. After the season, once I've gathered that information, I can work with Steven and his agent on a contract structure that will be in the best interest of both sides." - Julien Brisebois

Brisebois' answer isn't sitting well with many. There's a feeling that the GM essentially told his captain, star player, and lifelong member of the team that he's only as good as his last season played, and that his commitment to the Bolts throughout the years means little.

Stamkos was drafted first overall by the Lightning in 2008 and has captained the team to two Stanley Cups. He has just this season remaining on a contract that carried a cap hit of $8.5 million.
