Major Canadian League Officially Bans Fighting for Upcoming Season

BY TJ TUCKER    AUGUST 10, 2023  (4:21 PM)
New rules released today by one of Canada's Major Junior leagues have officially banned fighting. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), announced new rules implemented for 2023-24 that severely punishes players who drop the gloves.

Section 4 of the QMJHL's rules, which deals with fighting, now says anyone fighting will be immediately ejected from a game and will face supplementary discipline after that. The rules also apply to any members of a team who aren't players.

The league said this was coming several months ago following a request by the Quebec government to curb violence in the league, believing careers are being cut short and players are suffering life-long injuries after getting into fights. Of the three major junior leagues in Canada (QMJHL, OHL, WHL), the QMJHL had the lowest incidents of fighting the past few seasons.
