Montreal Decides Who to Keep Between the Pipes and Who Will be Shipped Out

BY TJ TUCKER    AUGUST 30, 2023  (9:31 PM)
The Montreal Canadiens had a decision to make before the upcoming season. With three goaltenders in the system that could potentially fill a starting role, the team needed to decide who to move out. According to a new report, that's been done.

La Poche Bleue reports that a source has told them that Habs GM Kent Hughes has informed one of his goaltenders that he'll be the one sticking around. The goalie is veteran Jake Allen.

"'They've told him they'll keep him,' a well-informed source tells us of Allen. He's so valuable in the room and is [Sam] Montembeault's mentor." - La Poche Bleue

Hughes had already told reporters that he sees Montembeault, 26, as a potential long-term starter with the team. Keeping Allen as his mentor leaves Casey DeSmith as the guy on his way out of Montreal as soon as a suitable trade partner can be found. DeSmith was picked up from the Pittsburgh Penguins in early August as part of a three-way trade that included the San Jose Sharks. DeSmith, 32, has one season left on his current deal with a cap hit of $1.8 million.
