NHL veteran of over 500 NHL games, leaves North America; signs overseas

After more than 500 regular season games in the NHL, a veteran defenceman has decided to head overseas to play hockey. 31-year-old Patrik Nemeth has signed a two-year deal with SC Bern of the Swiss National League.

Nemeth was a second round pick of the Dallas Stars in 2010. He started his career in the AHL and took a few seasons to get a full-time role in the NHL. However, for the past six seasons, he played exclusively in the big league. Besides Dallas, he also suited up for Colorado, Detroit, the New York Rangers and Arizona. The Coyotes picked up Nemeth in a trade with the Rangers. After one season there, the team decided to buyout the remaining year left on his contract, making him a free agent.

Nemeth won a Calder Cup with the AHL Texas Stars, and won a gold medal with his home country of Sweden at the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championship. He was credited with an assist on a goal by Mike Zibanejad in overtime of the final game to beat Russia for the championship.
