Player with only 1 season of experience signs a 64.5 million deal contract with Atlantic Division team

The NHL salary cap forces teams to make very interesting decisions sometimes. Tonight the Ottawa Senators bet big on young defenseman Jake Sanderson announcing a massive contract extension for the young defender.

The #sens have signed Jake Sanderson to an eight-year extension carrying a $8.05M AAV.

In his career Sanderson has only played 77 NHL games. Last season Sanderson scored 4 goals and added 28 assists. With the salary cap climbing the Sens are getting big on their homegrown talent to help get them to the next level, but this contract has the ability to be a huge miss if Sanderson's development slows it be peaks early.

This deal continues to show the impact the salary cap has on teams decisions. However, it's difficult to understand how a player sees nearly 65 million dollars before playing his second season.
