Report - San Jose Sharks would like to trade Erik Karlsson to the Toronto Maple Leafs but one thing continues to hold up the deal
BY JOSH JULY 21, 2023 (10:04)
Last season the Sharks finished 29th in the National Hockey League, only 2 points ahead of the last place Anaheim Ducks. Without Karlsson the Sharks would have easily finished dead last in the league. So, after some difficult conversations both the Sharks and Karlsson have decided that it would be best for both parties to part ways.
Karlsson is still seeking his first Stanley Cup, one of the only things left for him to accomplish. Unfortunately, given the direction of the Sharks, Karlsson won't have an opportunity to win a Cup there. The Sharks have been actively trying to trade Karlsson, with the Carolina Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins as the rumored favorites, but according to Hockey Insider Eklund, the Sharks would actually prefer to send Karlsson to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The big Domino here is Nylander and Toronto. I believe the Sharks like the Leafs package the most, but so far only Pittsburgh and Carolina have actually figured out ways to make the money work. The Leafs can't consider this without moving Nylanderand unfortunately for themeveryone knows thisthere is no immediately rush yet

According to Eklund, if it were up to the Sharks they'd accept the Maple Leafs offer, but unfortunately the hold up there is the Maple Leafs figuring out a way to move William Nylander. While things have slowed down this month, there are multiple teams above the NHL salary cap and lots of teams still looking to move players heading into the month of August.
Buckle up.
