Tim Stutzle takes subtle shot at Alex DeBrincat in recent interview

BY COOPER GODIN    SEPTEMBER 9, 2023  (7:46)
It's been nearly two months since the Ottawa Senators traded restricted free agent forward Alex DeBrincat to the Detroit Red Wings, who inked him to a four-year contract.

Throughout the months leading up to the trade, it became well-known that Alex DeBrincat had no interest in signing a long-term contract extension to remain with the Ottawa Senators, which led General Manager Pierre Dorion to explore the trade market. Ultimately, it was the Red Wings and Steve Yzerman who added 25-year-old and in return, the Senators received Dominik Kubalik, defensive prospect Donovan Sebrango, a conditional first-round pick in 2024 and a fourth-round pick in 2024.

Senators forward Tim Stutzle sat down with Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek for an interview on the 32 Thoughts podcast and was asked if he has any say in trying to recruit players or getting players to re-sign and was asked more specifically about the Alex DeBrincat situation.

"I mean, I don't think you can really I mean, DeBrincat to stay. It's his choice. You can say whatever you want. If he doesn't want to be there, then I don't want to make him have to be there. You know, like, It's fine to us. I think the whole group, we've been saying it. We want him to stay. We want him to be apart of this group. And he's a great guy, great player." Stutzle said.

Stutzle went on to add, "But in the end, if you don't want to be there then good luck on your way."

The Senators won't have to wait long before Alex DeBrincat makes his return to Canadian Tire Centre, as they'll play host to the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, October 21st at 1 p.m., Ottawa's fifth game of the 2023-24 season. There's no doubt it'll be must-watch TV and DeBrincat will be hearing it from the crowd from warmup until the final buzzer.
