Zegras isn't known to be a physical or a dirty player, as he has often relied on skill to get his production at the NHL level, but with Michael Rasmussen skating down the middle of the ice, he laid this unnecessary and very dirty hit to the head.
Unsurprisingly, Frank Seravalli was quick to report that Zegras would have a hearing with the DoPS, and although he's got a very clean record through his time in the NHL, Zegras couldn't escape punishment on this occasion.
Given how disengaged Zegras has looked this year, it's a major surprise that he tried to bring this type of intensity, but it's clear that while trying it, he targeted the head of Rasmussen, which is the type of hit that the NHL are clearly looking to get out of the league to protect their players.
At this point in time, the Ducks chances of contending are all but over in 2024/25, so they'll use the rest of the season to continue developing their young stars, and if that means getting Zegras back on track and using this type of intensity in a positive, legal manner, it could be a huge win for Anaheim as they look to build a winning core in the next few years.
