Brad Marchand is mad at all of the fans that have been booing national anthems during hockey games in more recent times, and he absolutely ripped in to them live.
That in turn got American fans to strike back and boo the Canadian anthem, fueling a controversy over the league's anthem traditions at the beginning of a game.
Several of the pros, such as Detroit's
Patrick Kane, and Boston's Brad Marchand, weighed in on what should be done.
Marchand wants people to respect the veterans
Marchand explained the incident on What Chaos! podcast and said it was a display of dumb disrespect.
«The anthems are there as a sign of respect because of our veterans and all that they sacrificed. The entire reason we get to play this game and have freedom.»
- Brad Marchand
Marchand is of the view that anyone who is booing the anthems is dumb and that he can't believe there are that many disrespectful fans in the world, something that a number of other players also weighed in on.
«Also, we're playing hockey. We don't have any decision in what's going on..., so I don't agree with that stuff.»
- Brad Marchand
While Marchand was able to get his message across without hesitation, other players such as
Auston Matthews opted to be neutral to the controversy, even when it would be in his interest to get in on it.
Marchand is set to play for Team Canada on Saturday when it plays the USA in Montreal, after their game against Sweden tonight.
How the fans behave during the singing of the anthems is not yet known, but it is certain that build-up to the game is going to be absolutely electric.
