Don Sweeney and the Bruins Wave the White Flag: GM Hints at Giving up on the Season

Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney spoke to the media today, seemingly admitting that the season may be lost.
The Bruins have had a tough season, there is no denying that.
Currently, the team has a record of 27-24-7, which gives them 61 points through 58 games, good for 6th place in the Atlantic Division.
They are just one point behind the Ottawa Senators for the final playoff spot in the Eastern conference, but Ottawa does have a game in hand, and better underlying numbers this season.
Regardless, this is not the position Don Sweeney imagined his team would be at this point in the season.
Last night the team arguably hit a new low when they lost to the Anaheim Ducks in overtime, a team they should beat every time if they want to make the playoffs.
This morning, Don Sweeney spoke to the media and would not commit to a direction as the trade deadline approaches, but it did seem like he is not interested in buying big for this season.
He added that he will have a 'cautious' approach at the trade deadline, contrary to recent years in which he was an aggressive buyer.
Now, if anything, it seems like he might be leaning more in the aggressive seller direction.
That being said, the team does not have many valuable trade assets that are on expiring contracts, other than Trent Fredrick, and of course,
Brad Marchand.
It would certainly be a sad day in Boston if Marchand was ever traded, but with the reality of the situation settling in on the front office, it may be more likely than you think.
