Darryl Sutter was reportedly fired after erratic behavior and after being investigated for 'making physical contact' with a player
When Brad Treliving left the Calgary Flames it was widely reported that a deteriorating relationship with Darryl Sutter was the cause. At the time the Flames organization remained loyal to Sutter, and were unwilling to allow Treliving to terminate the coach who had 2-year and approximately $8,000,000 remaining on his contract. However, a couple weeks later Sutter also found himself unemployed.
Many questions remained around what had occurred in Calgary to lead to such a significant change of course. Today The Athletic released the following information that unveils what went wrong in Calgary.
He made derisive comments, both publicly and privately, seemingly to single out players and in some cases, to embarrass them. In November, the franchise launched an internal investigation to probe an incident after Sutter allegedly made physical contact with a player on the bench during a game.
By November, the team became aware of an incident in which he was alleged to have made physical contact with a player on the bench during a game, according to three league sources, who were granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the matter. Players and staff members were interviewed about the alleged incident. According to multiple league sources, the player told his teammates he did not find the contact to have crossed a line and did not want to see the matter escalated.
While the player decided they this wasn't crossing a line, it clearly seems the organization felt it was not worth the risk of keeping Sutter around. With things heading south in Calgary the hiring of Craig Conroy as the new General Manager the team clearly wants to go another way.
This news clearly gives an insight as to why the Flames were so willing to pay Sutter 8 million dollars to not coach the team.
