Flames defenceman reportedly insulted by team's contract offer
The Calgary Flames will be a team to keep an eye on in the coming months as a number of key players are set to become unrestricted free agents at the end of the 2023-24 season.
One of those players is veteran defenceman Chris Tanev, who's in the final year of a four-year deal he signed with the club back in 2020. Tanev's contract has a cap hit of $4.5 million, along with a modified no-trade clause, but depending on how the Flames do this season, he could be a target for a number of contending teams leading up to the March 8th deadline.
According to reports, Tanev has had contract discussions with the Calgary Flames but is 'insulted' with the term he was deal he was offered, more specifically, the term.
"I'm not allowed to say anything more on Hanifin yet. No idea why they aren't announcing it. I CAN say that Tanev was «insulted» by whatever initial offer the team made. Assumption was lack of term attached. #Flames"
It'll be interesting to see where things go on the Tanev front, as the Flames' priority right now is to re-sign Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm, both of whom are key pieces to the short and long-term future in Calgary. It seems pretty unlikely that Tanev will be back with the Calgary Flames next season, given the direction they want to head in and him seemingly wanting term on his next contract, something that the team may not be comfortable with for the blue liner who turns 34 in December.
