NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed today that the Carolina Hurricanes made a huge extension offer to Mikko Rantanen, but are yet to receive an answer.
Mikko Rantanen represented his home country of Finland last week during the Four Nations faceoff tournament, but went home without any hardware as Canada defeated the United States in the final.
However, he did reportedly get involved in some business with his NHL club during the break.
According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Hurricanes had extensive talks with Rantanen and his agent during the tournament, but they were unable to agree to a contract extension.
And now Friedman has revealed that the Carolina Hurricanes have offered a massive extension to Mikko Rantanen but he still has yet to respond.
As a result, it seems like the team may in fact be leaning towards trading the winger ahead of next month's trade deadline.
Friedman emphasized that the Hurricanes should have no problems retaining salary on him, which could bring his cap hit down to a minuscule 2.3 million dollars.
"There were talks between the Hurricanes and Rantanen during the Four Nations and we'll see where this goes. His cap hit with the Hurricanes is 4.625 (million) so if they want to flip Rantanen and it comes to that, its a little over 2.3 Million."
This falls in line with what we have been hearing from other insiders regarding this situation.
These reports could make Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky's job very difficult in the coming weeks, but suddenly his team has become the center of attention in the NHL.
So be sure to keep an eye on the Carolina Hurricanes as we could see the team pull off another blockbuster deal.
