Hall of Famer Chelios contract not renewed at ESPN
While the public is used to hearing about cuts to the sports media world, the word today is that ESPN has decided not to renew Chris Chelios, among others moving forward into their 2023-2024 National Hockey League coverage.
While Chelios has been the first talent shoe to drop, it is expected that more cuts are coming in the next days, weeks and months. This comes as the network has signed Pat McAfee to a lucrative multi-year deal while preparing to dump veterans who've given decades to the company in what can only be explained as cost-cutting moves to save face.
It should go without saying that no job is safe in media and those involved should always look for their next move, but when your name is the likes of Stephen A. Smith, Troy Aikman, Joe Buck, Doris Burke, Adam Schefter and Adrian Wojnarowski amongst a couple of others, it can be almost automatically assumed your job is safe which is disappointing in a sense because it is very rare to see fresh blood in this capacity.
Chelios, a 2013 Hockey Hall of Famer, three-time James Norris Trophy winner and three-time Stanley Cup winner, has been with the ESPN since 2021.
