In a post on social media on Tuesday evening, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic shared the Columbus Blue Jackets have fired Mark Recchi, who was an assistant coach with them last season. Recchi was informed that he wouldn't be retained by the Blue Jackets for the 2024-25 season and had one year remaining on his contract with the team.
Recchi, 56, was brought into the Columbus Blue Jackets organization in the middle of training camp last season as the team dealt with the fallout from the Mike Babcock situation. In his only season with the Blue Jackets, the team had a record of 27-43-12, finishing last place in the Metropolitan Division.
The most likely reason for Mark Recchi being fired is that the Blue Jackets have recently hired a new Head Coach - Dean Evason, and he'll want to bring in his own staff before training camp begins in mid-September.
Recchi will now be without a team for the first time since the 2022-23 season and it wouldn't be shocking if he has to wait a little bit to find a new job in the NHL, with most coaching staffs already set for 2024-25.
