Dallas Stars Veteran Jamie Benn Learns Punishment For Roughing On Winnipeg's Mark Scheifele
The Winnipeg Jets took a crucial Game 5 on Thursday night, and after roughing Mark Scheifele, veteran Jamie Benn has been fined by the NHL's Department of Player Safety following his cheap shot on veteran Mark Scheifele.
Game 5 between the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars was an intense one, and while the home team came away with the victory in the must-win game, the Stars certainly didn't make it physically easy on their opponents.
That charge was led by captain Jamie Benn, who took a cheap shot on fellow veteran Mark Scheifele after the two were engaged in a scrum, and whether or not 55 embellished the call, somehow, the Stars ended on the power play.
This wasn't a situation that was taken lightly by fans, as many took to social media to call out Benn's actions, with even neutral fans not enjoying the cheap shot that the veteran took on his opponent.
Now, unsurprisingly, the NHL's Department of Player Safety has gotten involved, handing down a $5,000 fine to Benn for roughing his opponent, the same fine that Max Domi received this past week for his boarding hit on opposing captain Aleksander Barkov.
At this point of his career, Benn likely doesn't care about any type of fine, as he was simply trying to get the physical advantage on his opponent late in a game that their team were clearly about to lose.
Ultimately, this may have been embellished by Scheifele, but there was no reason to throw a cheap shot like this from Benn, and while he won't miss any time, he's been handed down his punishment from the Department of Player Safety ahead of a pivotal Game 6 on home ice.
