Is Thomas Harley Stealing Miro Heiskanen's Crown as Dallas' True No. 1 Defenseman?

The Dallas Stars are riding two elite blueliners, but one question is starting to creep into every conversation: is Thomas Harley already more valuable than Miro Heiskanen?
Harley, just 23 years old, has exploded during this postseason. His overtime power-play winner to eliminate the Winnipeg Jets was his fourth goal and 11th point in 13 games, placing him just one point behind Edmonton Oilers defenseman
Evan Bouchard for the NHL playoff scoring lead among defensemen through two rounds.
His impact goes beyond points. Harley led all skaters in ice time through the first two rounds, even while Heiskanen returned from a knee injury.
His all-situations usage is making some wonder if he is quietly emerging as Dallas's most important defender.
Thomas Harley's rise and Miro Heiskanen's pedigree create a debate over Dallas Stars' defensive hierarchy
Heiskanen, of course, is still a franchise cornerstone. The 25-year-old has been Dallas's workhorse for years, averaging more than 24 minutes per game during the regular season and anchoring the top power play.
But Harley's calm play, ability to drive offense, and heavy usage are turning heads.
«Knew he was a tall, lanky defenseman who wore No. 55, but immediately, you're like 'Holy. This guy is very good.'»
Drafted 18th overall in 2019, Harley took the long road through the AHL but now leads his draft class in playoff points (24) and games played (53). His full career and playoff totals are available on
HockeyDB.
I think Harley's upside is now pushing this debate, though Heiskanen's experience still makes him the safer «No. 1» today.
Still, I believe Harley's composure and offensive game could make him Dallas's top defenseman as soon as next season.
