Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger has finally shared his feelings on losing teammate and close friend Mason Marchment, who was dealt to the Seattle Kraken earlier this summer.
For Oettinger, the trade wasn't just about losing a linemate, it felt like losing family.
Speaking to media, Oettinger admitted the move hit hard on a personal level.
«That was really tough. It's no secret how close he and I are,» he said, explaining that both of their families built strong ties during their time together in Dallas.
The two wives are best friends, which made the separation even more difficult.

The deal that sent Marchment to Seattle in late June included a fourth-round pick in 2025 and a third-rounder in 2026 heading back to Dallas. Marchment was coming off a strong campaign with 25 assists, 22 goals, and a +15 rating.
Even though fans were disappointed, Oettinger highlighted that the NHL is a business and moves like this are part of the job.
«It feels like right when I start calling someone my best friend, they get traded,» he said.
Marchment himself quickly addressed Seattle fans with a short video message promising to bring energy and hard work to the Kraken lineup.
Seattle's GM Jason Botterill also praised his style, noting that Marchment's size, skill, and strength will fit well with their system.
For Oettinger, the trade may have been painful, but he knows the Stars' ultimate goal hasn't changed. And for Dallas supporters, that reminder softens the sting of losing a fan favorite.
