The Dallas Stars have made a low-cost, high-utility move by signing forward Nathan Bastian to a one-year, one-way contract worth $775,000 for the 2025-26 NHL season.
General manager Jim Nill announced the deal on Saturday, describing Bastian as a player who can provide both depth and toughness to an already competitive roster.
The 27-year-old forward arrives in Dallas after spending the last several seasons with the New Jersey Devils, where he became known for his size, physical play, and ability to chip in offensively from the bottom six.
Nathan will add forward depth and a physical presence to our lineup, both of which will be valuable to our organization, Nill told NHL.com.
Nathan Bastian brings playoff experience and physical edge to the Dallas Stars
Bastian's NHL journey began when the Devils selected him 41st overall in the second round of the 2016 NHL Draft.
He made his debut with New Jersey before being selected by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft.
His time in Seattle was brief, as the Devils reclaimed him off waivers later that season.
Over 276 regular-season games, 254 of them with the Devils, Bastian has tallied 33 goals and 35 assists for 68 points.
He's also appeared in 17 playoff games, posting one goal and one assist, including five postseason appearances last year as New Jersey fell to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Last season, injuries and healthy scratches limited him to 59 games, where he registered 4 goals and 6 assists.
Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing over 200 pounds, Bastian uses his frame effectively, making him a valuable addition for a Stars team looking to add more bite to its forward group.
Personally, I think this is the type of under-the-radar signing that can pay dividends in a long playoff run.
