The Canadiens are packed with young defencemen, including first-round picks like David Reinbacher, plus Kaiden Guhle, Struble, and Lane Hutson all battling for regular spots.
That crowded depth chart could force Montreal to move Xhekaj, who brings the physical style Dallas is missing.

At 24, Xhekaj already has 165 NHL games under his belt, with nine goals, 20 assists, and 300 penalty minutes.
He's not just a fighter, but his toughness stands out in today's NHL, where few players still intimidate opponents.
His -13 rating last season and occasional defensive lapses make him a work in progress, but his ceiling is worth the risk for a contender like Dallas.
According to the Montreal Gazette, head coach Martin St. Louis praised him, saying:
«He's come a long way and he can do way more than just fight he's still very young and going to keep improving.»
Dallas, with skilled players like Jason Robertson, Wyatt Johnston or Mikko Rantanen needs a player who can protect its stars and punish forecheckers.
Adding Xhekaj would give them that, while also adding a defender who is learning to choose his battles and contribute beyond his fists.
I think the Stars would be making a huge mistake if they let another team grab him first.
