The Dallas Stars have a decision looming that could reshape their blue line for years, and it all centers on Thomas Harley's next contract as he enters a pivotal year in his young career.

The 24-year-old defenseman has blossomed into one of Dallas's most reliable players, quietly building a case that he belongs in the same conversation as Miro Heiskanen when it comes to long-term value.
Last season, Harley posted 16 goals and 34 assists for 50 points across 78 games. His impact only grew in the playoffs, where he added 14 points in 18 contests, often stepping into bigger minutes when Heiskanen was out with injury.
His performance even earned him a last-minute call to represent Hockey Canada at the Four Nations Face-Off, a sign that his reputation is catching fire beyond Dallas.
As noted by Sporting News, NHL insider Jeff Marek recently suggested that Harley's extension could use Heiskanen's $8.45 million per year as the ceiling.
That doesn't mean Dallas would pay him more than their No. 1 defenseman, but it sets a clear benchmark for what Harley's next deal could look like.

Why Thomas Harley's contract year could define the Dallas Stars' future

Over 197 career NHL games, Harley has already tallied 103 points. His postseason résumé is equally impressive, with 27 points in 57 playoff games, production most teams would love from their second-best blueliner.
The challenge for Dallas will be balancing Harley's raise with the rest of their roster. With contracts already committed to Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz, and Mikko Rantanen, general manager Jim Nill will have to play the cap game carefully to avoid squeezing out depth.
If Harley puts up another strong season, the Stars may have no choice but to commit long-term and lock in their future top pairing of Heiskanen and Harley.
That tandem could keep Dallas in the Stanley Cup conversation for the rest of the decade.
Personally, I think Harley has earned every bit of this conversation. His game has evolved beyond «support player,» and this contract year might prove he's one of the NHL's next great defensemen.
