News this week that head coach Derek Lalonde would be leaving the Detroit Red Wings sent shockwaves across the hockey landscape. He was replaced by Todd McLellan.
By the time that call was made, the team fell a fair way out of the postseason picture with the NHL's Christmas break in sight. On Saturday, Derek Lalonde spoke publicly for the first time since being let go.
His comments, via NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on 'Hockey Night in Canada', were professional and thankful.
Elliotte Friedman lauded Lalonde for how he carried himself out the door, noting the now-former coach took time to show his appreciation for his time with the Red Wings rather than any bitterness at having been let go during the holiday season.
That said, Lalonde thanked Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman, spoke warmly about the passionate fan base, and expressed confidence that the players can improve in the future.
Optimistic as he was, Lalonde's stint with the Red Wings did not manage to make the playoffs in either of the two seasons during which he held the post of head coach.
That was a brutal baptism into NHL head coaching, though many believe that had more to do with the limitations of the roster, something that ultimately falls onto Steve Yzerman's shoulders.
Now, attention will be turned to new head coach Todd McLellan, who will be the man tasked with leading this team into better days.
The question is whether he really can provide the spark necessary to ignite the resurgence that Detroit fans are clamoring for. Time will tell.
