John Leonard is back up, and Todd McLellan now heads into Dallas staring at a real forward shortage on Saturday night.

Detroit recalled Leonard under emergency conditions, which tells you this isn't a depth move for later in the week. This is about getting through puck drop with enough healthy bodies.
The timing says plenty. Dylan Larkin and Andrew Copp are the known injuries, and that leaves the Red Wings dangerously close to dressing fewer than 12 forwards.
That changes the conversation around Leonard right away. He's not arriving as a luxury extra.
He's arriving because McLellan may need a live option on the bench from the opening shift.
For Detroit, that matters even more on the road against the Stars.
A thin forward group can throw off matchups, special teams rotation, and how long a coach can trust his top six.
It also puts pressure on the rest of the lineup. Wingers who were set for sheltered minutes can get pushed up, and bottom-six players can suddenly be looking at heavier defensive work.
Leonard's recall is the kind of move that can look small on paper and feel big by the second period. If Detroit is short up front, every line change gets tighter.

Todd McLellan doesn't have much room here

McLellan was hired by Detroit on December 26, 2024, and this is exactly the sort of spot where his bench decisions get magnified.
There's no room for wasted shifts when the forward count is under stress.
That's why Leonard becomes more than a call-up headline. He becomes lineup insurance, and maybe more than that if Detroit needs a simple north game and fresh legs on a tough road night.
The bigger issue for the Red Wings is what this says about the room going into Dallas.
When you're making another emergency recall, you're not managing comfort. You're managing survival.
And that usually means coaches shorten the bench fast. If Detroit falls behind early, McLellan may have to lean even harder on his best available forwards and protect the rest of the group.
So yes, Leonard is the name on the transaction. But the real story is Detroit's lineup squeeze, and whether this club can get through Saturday without losing more ground.
If Leonard plays, this recall stops being background noise. It becomes a direct test of Detroit's forward depth, McLellan's bench control, and how much this team can absorb in one night.
