Game-used Gretzky stick from 1988 Stanley Cup Final expected to sell for massive price at auction
When you're the greatest player in the history of the sport, there's always an expectation that if any memorabilia comes up for sale, it'll go for a massive amount.
On Tuesday, it was announced that Wayne Gretzky's stick from the Edmonton Oilers' 1988 Stanley Cup victory is going up for auction and is expected to fetch more than $500,000 USD.
"To have something like this is really remarkable," said Sotheby's Head of Streetwear and Modern Collectibles, Brahm Wachter.
"You're talking about really the greatest to ever grace the ice and you're talking about his last championship, which of course helped cement his name into the history books."
This won't be the first piece of Gretzky memorabilia from the 1988 Stanley Cup victory to be sold at an auction. Nearly two years ago, Gretzky's jersey sold for $1.5 million, while his gloves went for around $200,000.
Edmonton's victory in 1988 over the Boston Bruins marked Wayne Gretzky's fourth and final Stanley Cup of his legendary career. Less than three months later, the Oilers traded Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings.
