Shortly after the League made McDavid's three-game suspension official, a few members of the Oilers organization came forward to share their opinion on the situation.
Notably, Kris Knoblauch and Corey Perry opened up about the NHL's decision and didn't hesitate to criticize the verdict.
The head coach started by pointing out how McDavid doesn't draw a lot of penalties, and how the Oilers' captain puts up with more than the average player because the refs don't call everything opponents do against him:
"Connor plays through a lot. Ironically, he doesn't draw many penalties. Our team doesn't draw that many penalties for that matter, which is kind of ironic because we usually have the puck
You look around the NHL, if you're a team that doesn't take very many penalties, you usually don't get many powerplays He puts up with more than the average player."
Then, Perry talked about how the League doesn't protect McDavid from all the abuse he faces on the ice:
"It's frustrating to watch when you're on his team because you see the abuse he takes. Anybody else in the league that stuff happens to, it's a penalty. But because he has the puck so much, (referees) don't want to call a penalty every time.
Why aren't we protecting the superstars? Why aren't we?. Every other league does it? They protect their superstars."
