The Edmonton Oilers have announced a massive update on Evander Kane, as the forward underwent an additional surgery during his rehabilitation.
Fans weren't expecting an update on his status so soon, as many believed he wouldn't return until the next playoffs.
However, the Oilers shared a new development regarding his rehabilitation.
Unfortunately, it's not a good one.
Indeed, the Oilers revealed in a recent press release that the forward underwent a successful knee surgery this week, which should add four to eight weeks of recovery.
This will force him to stop his current rehabilitation from the abdominal surgery he had back in September.
Read the statement from the Edmonton Oilers organization here:
"Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane underwent successful knee surgery on Thursday in Edmonton. It is expected that he will require four to eight weeks of recovery time.
While this procedure is unrelated to his abdominal surgery in September, it will require him to pause his current rehabilitation schedule to recover from Thursday's operation.
His rehabilitation will continue to take place in Edmonton under the supervision of the club's medical staff."
Kane has been on LTIR since the start of the season, and the Oilers general manager Ken Holland has been using the cap space made available by Kane's $5,125,000 AAV contract being off the books to add players like
Jeff Skinner and Victor Arvidsson and offer a massive eight-year, $14 M AAV extension to
Leon Draisaitl.
If Kane can return in the playoffs, the Oilers could be in a position to use the cap circumvention loophole, like many championship-winning teams did in the past.
