The Edmonton Oilers won the Western Conference Finals again, but after Connor McDavid touched the Clarence Campbell Bowl, fans were absolutely furious watching back at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
Hockey players and hockey fans are among some of the most superstitious in the world, and that has clearly been on full display over the last few days with the Edmonton Oilers.
After winning the Western Conference Finals, Connor McDavid proceeded to touch the Clarence Campbell Bowl, which is a big no-no for many fans and players, with the Oilers captain defending his decision, noting that last year, they didn't touch it and lost anyway.
This year, he decided to go a different way, and fans in attendance were clearly not happy with his decision, as the fans watching along in Edmonton had an audible reaction to seeing him touch the trophy.
This reaction comes as no surprise, as fans in general believe that teams shouldn't touch any trophy, as the Panthers avoided touching their Eastern Conference Finals trophy a season ago, going on to beat the Oilers in seven games in the Stanley Cup Finals.
It's easy to see McDavid's reasoning however, as the team did not win after taking part in the tradition of not touching it a year ago, so in doing so, he looks to change up the Oilers fortune, with those fans in attendance hoping that the reverse jinx works from their captain.
At the end of the day, none of this likely matters, as the play will be decided on the ice between the two best teams remaining in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but given how historically superstitious everyone has been about trophies in the NHL, their reactions should come as no surprise.
