The most recent comments from veteran Florida Panthers forward Brad Marchand are sparking hope of a possible contract extension to remain with the club.
The Florida Panthers have gotten their money's worth with the acquisition of Brad Marchand, who was previously the captain of the divisional foe Boston Bruins.
Marchand
scored the 2OT GWG on Friday night in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, giving the Panthers the victory to tie the series at 1-1. It was also his 3rd goal in the last pair of games, as he had already scored shorthanded in the same game while also scoring a PPG in Game 1.
Marchand was traded to the Panthers after being unable to agree on a new contract extension with the Bruins, a decision that was met with scorn and anger from their fans.
While Marchand is set to become a UFA this summer and has been linked to a handful of teams, his latest comments indicate that he could be considering running it back with the Panthers.
There are teams where that absolutely matters. It doesn't matter for every player, but when you're dealing with guys that have a choice between multiple teams, it absolutely plays a part. If you have two teams that are offering the same contract, you're going to pick the team with less tax.
Yeah, I've thought about it. But we'll deal with that in the future.
The state of Florida's tax-friendly situation is a major reason why several athletes in all four professional sports leagues often seek to play there.
Right now, Marchand has 17 points (7G, 10A) in 19 playoff games, including a pair of OT winners. He's helped the Panthers move within 3 wins of a 2nd straight Stanley Cup win, and if he gets the chance to once again have his name on the hallowed trophy, it could make his decision to re-sign with the Panthers easier.
