Adam Engstrom is back with the Canadiens, and Martin St. Louis is giving the 22-year-old defenseman another shot at a key moment.

Montreal isn't calling him up to watch.
The Canadiens sit at 94 points in 73 games, riding a 5-game win streak. The margin is tight, and every lineup decision is tied to performance.
Engstrom already got his first NHL look this season.
He played 11 games, posted 0 points, and carried a +3 rating. The offense wasn't there, but he didn't hurt the team either.
His usage stayed controlled. No special teams, mostly five-on-five, and shifts built around puck movement.
Back in Laval, the numbers jumped.
Engstrom recorded 10 goals and 24 assists for 34 points in 45 games. He also posted a +14 rating, showing he wasn't just producing, he was driving play.

A modern defenseman forcing his way into the mix

At 6-foot-2 and 193 pounds, Engstrom isn't just a mobile defender. He can handle NHL pace and still win races to loose pucks.
His game is built on transition.
He retrieves pucks quickly, turns up ice, and makes that first pass without hesitation. That's exactly what St. Louis wants from his bottom pair.
There's also draft pedigree here.
Montreal selected him 92nd overall in 2022, and his development path has been steady since leaving Sweden for North America.
Before Laval, he put up 22 points in 51 games in the SHL, then added 13 points in 7 junior games the year prior. The offensive instincts have always been there.
Now it's about translating that to the NHL level.
The Canadiens blue line has been stable, but not untouchable. Third-pair minutes are available for anyone who can move the puck cleanly.
Engstrom doesn't project as a penalty kill option yet. But at five-on-five, he can tilt the ice with speed and smart decisions.
If he sticks, Montreal gets faster on the back end.
If he struggles, the leash won't be long this time of year.
That's the reality inside a playoff race.
