Noah Dobson won't dress for Martin St-Louis as the Montreal Canadiens open Round 1 against Tampa Bay, forcing a major shakeup on the blue line.

That's the call coming out of Wednesday night, and it changes everything for this matchup.
Dobson is dealing with a fractured hand and isn't expected back anytime soon. The only realistic window would be a Game 7.
That leaves Montreal without one of its most trusted defensemen right when matchups tighten.
Dobson wrapped the season with 47 points and a +5 rating, logging heavy minutes in all situations.
On X, Marco Normandin from HabsolumentFan write this about the injury of Noah Dobson :
I've been told that Noah Dobson had to undergo thumb surgery in the past few days.

As for the timeline of his return, internally with the Canadiens, they're talking about an absence of 4 to 6 weeks.

There are always miracles in the playoffs, but the chances of seeing him play in the first round are very slim.

He wasn't just producing. He was stabilizing shifts, moving pucks cleanly, and eating tough assignments.
St-Louis now has to rework his entire defensive rotation on the fly.

Canadiens lose Noah Dobson for playoff opener as blue line gets reshuffled

Lane Hutson becomes the clear anchor. After putting up 78 points, his ice time is about to climb again.
Expect him on the power play, late-game situations, and likely against Tampa's top line.
But that comes with risk. More minutes means tougher matchups and less sheltering.
Behind him, the depth gets tested quickly.
Alexandre Carrier is trying to get back for Game 1 after a late-March upper-body injury. His status is still up in the air.
If he plays, he brings 22 points and a +2 rating, but more importantly, experience in structured defensive minutes.
If he doesn't, Montreal leans even harder on younger pieces who haven't faced playoff pace yet.
And that's where this series could swing.
Tampa Bay rolls in with elite firepower. Nikita Kucherov posted 130 points, and Jake Guentzel added 88.
Without Dobson, there's less margin for error defending controlled entries and second chances around the crease.
This isn't just about replacing one player. It's about reshaping pairings, roles, and matchups overnight.
Dobson missing time hits the penalty kill too, where his reads and positioning mattered.
Now the Canadiens need quick adjustments, or this series could tilt early.
