Top NHL Analyst Elliotte Friedman is revealing details of a failed trade that nearly took place at the 2024 NHL Entry Draft between Montreal and Anaheim.
Despite multiple speculative rumours surrounding the future of forward
Trevor Zegras with the Anaheim Ducks, he remained with the club this year; they finished without a postseason spot.
But according to an explosive new report from top analyst Elliotte Friedman, Zegras was nearly on his way to the Montreal Canadiens in what would have been a major trade at the 2024 NHL Entry Draft held at The Sphere in Las Vegas.
Friedman indicated that the Canadiens were offering an unnamed young defenseman and the 21st overall pick that was used to select
Michael Hage, but things changed when the Ducks took
Beckett Sennecke because they'd have a shot at
Ivan Demidov.
Friedman on 32TP says he believes Montreal was working on a trade for Trevor Zegras last draft, they were offering a young defenceman and a 1st overall pick, not 5, but the pick they selected Michael Hage with (21st overall).
What changed was when Anaheim selected Sennecke, Montreal knew they would have a shot at Demidov. Hughes and Gorton are very careful about redundancy, they don't like redundancy.
The Canadiens then took Demidov with the 5th selection; he's now arrived with the team and has joined them for Saturday's game against the divisional foe Toronto Maple Leafs as they attempt to secure their 1st playoff berth since qualifying for the 2021 Stanley Cup Final.
Zegras, who has 31 points (12G, 19A) in 54 games, is under contract for an additional year with an AAV (average annual value) of $5,750,000.
