The Montreal Canadiens are looking to tie their series up against the Washington Capitals, and now, they've revealed the status of starter Sam Montembeault after their goaltender left Game 3 with an injury.
The Montreal Canadiens picked up a key win in Game 3 of their first-round series against the Washington Capitals, and with a crucial Game 4 upcoming, they could quickly get back into a series that no one believed they had any business being competitive in.
Unfortunately, that win didn't come without loss, as the team saw starting goaltender Sam Montembeault leave the ice, with young rookie
Jakub Dobes replacing him for the remainder of the game.
Early on Sunday, the team recalled
Cayden Primeau from the AHL's Laval Rocket, with many believing this could be the precursor to an announcement that Montembeault would miss the remainder of the series.
Now, Head Coach Martin St. Louis has confirmed that's not the case in very positive news, as he has revealed that Montemeault will be day-to-day moving forward, although it will be the rookie Dobes to start in Game 4 on Sunday evening.
While it's not ideal to be starting a rookie goaltender against one of the NHL's best offensive units, it's certainly a positive day for the Canadiens with Montembeault likely back at some point in the series, and if Dobes can thrive while he's out, it will give the coaching staff a very tough decision to make.
For now though, we'll see Dobes on Sunday and depending on how things go, we may even see Montembeault back for a crucial Game 5, and with momentum and the Bell Centre behind them, nobody should underestimate the Canadiens in this series moving forward.
