The New York Islanders season is officially over, and in a humiliating loss to the cross-town rival Rangers, Head Coach Patrick Roy pulled not one but both goalies.
The New York Islanders 2024/25 season hasn't gone the way that GM Lou Lamoriello and the team would have hoped, and Thursday nights matchup with the New York Rangers was simply the icing on the cake.
Against their cross-town rivals, the Islanders simply didn't show up to play, and after a poor start, Head Coach Patrick Roy pulled young goaltender Patrick Hogberg, turning to rookie
Tristan Lennox in the process.
Unfortunately, after facing just two shots and letting in a goal, Roy would then make the absolute shock move of pulling Lennox too, even though it was his NHL debut after just two shots.
This shocked everyone in attendance, analysts and even the players themselves, and surprisingly, after the game Roy admitted he made a mistake, revealing that this is something he shouldn't have done.
«I take full responsibility for this. Might not have been my best decision.»
At 22-years of age, this was a dream come true for Lennox, but things quickly turned sour, and while Roy would eventually admit to his mistake, it's hard to un-rattle a young goaltender after he is pulled just minutes into his NHL debut for one mistake against a team that ultimately scored nine goals on the night.
With a few games left in the season with no Stanley Cup Playoffs on the horizon, it's hopeful that Lennox gets another shot in the NHL this season, and with more antics from Roy down the stretch, there's definitely pressure on him to keep his job beyond the 2024/25 campaign.
