An insider revealed the New York Rangers are set to place one of their star players on waivers today.
According to Renaud Lavoie, the Rangers could place their captain
Jacob Trouba on waivers today.
In a post on X, he wrote that while nothing was confirmed, he heard rumblings after the team announced he wouldn't take part in today's morning skate and tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Check out what he wrote here:
Then, it was confirmed that his health wasn't the issue and that Victor Mancini was called up from the Hartford Wolfpack in the AHL to replace the captain on the lineup:
Since last summer, the Rangers have reportedly been looking to trade Trouba and his seven-year, $8,000,000 AAV contract.
Set to become a free agent after the next season, most fans noticed that Trouba isn't the player he used to be. While he still gives powerful hits, he struggles in the other areas of his games, scoring only six points, all assists, in 24 games so far this year. He also has a -3 rating.
With most teams in the League scuffed by the salary cap, it's not surprising to see that the Rangers are struggling to trade him.
It will be interesting to see if Trouba ends up on waivers and whether a team claims him. We should know by 2 PM ET if he is placed on waivers and, 24 hours later, whether he is claimed or sent to the AHL.
