Legendary NHL and New York Rangers Broadcaster Sadly Passes Away at 68 Years Old
One of the most recognizable faces in New York sports has passed away as legendary Rangers announcer Al Trautwig has sadly left us behind.
Trautwig's passing was announced two days before he was set to turn 69, by MSG Networks successor Alan Hahn, who offered a touching tribute in an X post.
"I'm sad to share the news that we lost a legendary voice in sports. But we lost a lot more than that," Hahn said. "He was not only a friend, but a mentor and a teacher. He was, personally, one of my biggest resources of support when I moved into this career. Rest in peace, Al Trautwig."
Trautwig had been a fixture at MSG Network, hosting pre and postgame studio shows for the Knicks, New York Rangers, and New York Yankees broadcasts. In 2019, he last appeared on the network before taking an extended break.
Trautwig was reportedly suffering from cancer in 2024
In a 2024 Newsday article by Neil Best, Trautwig was said to have been undergoing treatment for cancer before continuing to teach at Long Island-based Adelphi University, his hometown.
Nationally, Trautwig was renowned for his auto racing, boxing, cycling, football, and tennis commentary contributions. He was also highly popular in Olympic coverage, commentating on gymnastics from 2000 to 2016.
He also appeared in a cameo as himself in the 1993 comedy film 'Cool Runnings', which told the Jamaican bobsled team's story as they made it to the 1988 Winter Olympics.
Rest in peace Al, you will be missed, and we offer our deepest condolences to his entire family and all of his friends.
