Matt Rempe was recently demoted to the AHL by the New York Rangers, but now that he's back, he has shared a positive reaction to the move, despite many expecting frustration and anger with the perceived step down.
The New York Rangers have been one of the NHL's best teams thus far in 2024/25, but despite that, they've still tried plenty of different combinations in their bottom-six. That recently led to the AHL demotion of standout heavyweight Matt Rempe, who took the NHL by storm a year ago, but with plenty of development needed, they believed the AHL was the best spot for the 22-year old.
However, just days after that demotion, Rempe earned a recall to the Rangers as they look to continue their red-hot start to the season with a 6-1-1 record through their first eight games.
While many believed that demotion would come with disappointment and anger, Rempe revealed his true reaction on Monday, revealing that he embraced the move and enjoyed the two games he played for the Hartford Wolf Pack.
"Yeah, for sure," No. 73 said. "Got to go play 17/18/19 minutes the last two games, played center, played all situations. It was good for me... Hadn't played a lot of minutes in a long while so it was good for me to get all those game situations, feel the puck, play not just the physical side and play in a top-six role."
While Rempe likely won't get top-six minutes in the NHL, allowing him the opportunity in the AHL has helped him get back to playing hockey, rather than simply being in the lineup to fight, and if he can continue to become more well-rounded, he'll be a key bottom-six piece for years to come in New York.
