Matt Rempe said at the start of this year that he wanted to come back and just play his game, not live off of an enforcer image he's carried with him throughout his time in the league.
Of course, that lasted all of a handful of games before the physical player was again at the center of some controversy. On Friday night against the Dallas Stars, Matt Rempe was front and center for all the wrong reasons.
In a highly dangerous incident, he planted a vicious elbow directly on the back of defenseman Miro Heiskanen's head, sending the star blueliner crashing into the boards.
The hit drew a five-minute major penalty, an immediate game ejection for Rempe, and widespread criticism.
Of course, that set off the firestorm online, with some fans insisting it was a clean hit, while others labeled it as blatant boarding at best, and reckless at worst.
Rempe was offered an in-person hearing by the Department of Player Safety, which means it had the potential to be more than a five-game suspension.
Regardless of opinions, though, the Department of Player Safety wasted little time getting to work on reviewing the incident.
The NHL announced the suspension of Rempe for the incident on Saturday. Given his past history and the fact that he hit a marquee player in Miro Heiskanen, this was fully expected.
It also points out how serious the league is getting with these types of dangerous plays, especially to highly susceptible players on the ice. For Rempe, this could be a career-defining moment, or the beginning of the end.
Whether he is still rallied around by his New York Rangers teammates and their fans remains to be seen, but what is for sure is that after what transpired lately, his future with the NHL is even more unsure than it has ever been.
