Matvei Michkov officially has his contract terminated
The Matvei Michkov era in Philadelphia is officially upon us, two years earlier than everyone was expecting.
Over the weekend, reports circulated that Matvei Michkov was going to head to North America to begin his NHL career this fall. However, a big hurdle was in the way - having his KHL contract with SKA St. Petersburg terminated.
Flash forward to Tuesday morning and it appears that an agreement has been reached to allow Matvei Michkov to come to North America early.
In a post on social media, KHL club SKA St. Peterburg announced that Matvei Michkov is leaving the team and heading to the NHL to play for the Philadelphia Flyers starting next season.
"Matvei Michkov is leaving SKA.
The forward will join the Philadelphia Flyers. His KHL rights remain with our club.
With SKA, Matvei won the 2022 Kharlamov Cup and became the first player born in 2004 to play for our senior team.
Good luck in the NHL, Matvei! #hcSKA" SKA St. Petersburg said.
Michkov, 19, was selected 7th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft and many believe the reason why he dropped was because of his contract status in Russia. Now that his contract is terminated and he's coming to the NHL two years early, it's safe to say that some of the teams that selected ahead of Philadelphia last year aren't too happy.
This past season, Michkov was loaned to HC Sochi by SKA St. Petersburg and he has a great year. In 47 games, he put up 41 points (19 goals, 22 assists), 45 penalty minutes and was a minus-six.
With Michkov's contract in Russia officially terminated, expect him to sign his entry-level deal with the Philadelphia Flyers very soon, potentially as early as today or tomorrow.
