John Tortorella was recently fired by the Philadelphia Flyers, and the most shocking part of all has now been revealed by a Flyers reporter.
While the move itself may not have come as a big surprise given Tortorella's recent comments after another poor season from the Flyers, there was one aspect of the move that did surprise.
That was noted by NHL reporter John Shannon on social media, as he reveals that for a long time, the feeling around the league was that when Tortorella was done behind the bench, he would take another, higher role in the organization, but obviously, that never came to fruition.
The 66-year old has been coaching in the NHL since way back in 1999/2000 with the New York Rangers, and after stints in Tampa Bay, New York, Vancouver, Columbus, and finally Philadelphia, it was clear that his coaching career was soon coming to an end.
The overarching belief was that he would take a role alongside Danny Briere in the organization as he looked to continue helping this Flyers team grow and develop, but now, he's officially open for a role anywhere in the league, with many believing that he'll find a role in a front office somewhere.
Ultimately, it appears as though Flyers fans and the organization simply ran out of patience with Tortorella, who made some terrible decisions with their lineup this season, and now, we will wait and see what his next career move will be.
