The Pittsburgh Penguins have been represented by the trio of captain Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang for 18 seasons, winning the Stanley Cup three times over that span (2009, 2016, and 2017). Over the close to two decades that the trio have been intact, there were rumbles that they would be separated, with the latest being in 2022 when Letang and Malkin were heading for free agency. In the end both decided to re-sign, signing for same cap hit of $6.1M. Crosby is entering the final year of his contract and can officially renew with Pittsburgh as of July 1st.
Sources have said General Manager Kyle Dubas and Crosby's camp have been quietly working away on a contract extension. Crosby's long-time team Evgeni Malkin revealed during an interview with RG.org that he is confident that Crosby will re-sign with the Penguins.
The soon to be 37 year old Crosby continues to defy age with his play. Coming off back to back 90 points seasons, scoring 42 goals and 52 assists last campaign.
With Crosby likely re-signing in Pittsburgh, what would a new contract look like? Does he want to play over the age of 40?
Crosby has counted for $8.7M against the cap on his last two contracts. He wears the No. 87 because he was born on August 7, 1987. Will he settle on $8.7M again or will he want more considering all he has done for the franchise? Maybe $9M or $10M would get it done for both parties. Whatever the number I am sure the #87 will factor in somewhere.
