The Athletic reporter Josh Yohe revealed today that the Penguins see Karlsson as a bit of a conundrum. Apparently, the team is not happy with his effort defensively, and they especially do not appreciate his attitude as the player himself says he is playing well.

With 10 points through 16 games it is certainly hard to argue against Karlsson. It might not be his 101-point pace he put up with San Jose several years ago, but that is still a very healthy clip for a defenseman in the NHL.
Karlsson's game has always been highlighted by his offensive style and points production, that is just they way he is. He has had success in that area of the game so far this season as well, showcased by his two-point game on Friday, where he factored in on the first two goals of the game en route to a 4-2 Penguins victory.
With all of that being said, Karlsson has never been known for his defense and that continues to be true as well. Despite his solid production, he has a rating of a whooping -7.
Furthermore, while the Penguins have had a mediocre offense averaging just under 3 goals per game, their defense has been a major problem as they have given up nearly 4 goals per game and currently boast a -15 goal differential.
Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas has put himself in a real pickle since committing so many assets to acquire Karlsson in 2023. Karlsson still has two years left on his contract after this one, and he comes with a massive 10 million dollar cap hit.
There is a very good chance the Penguins GM will not be able to move that deal in the coming years and it will continue to serve as an anchor for the team's cap flexibility, which does them no favors as they attempt to get back into the playoff picture.
