The Stars are being linked to a 3-time Norris winner, here's what it would cost
The Pittsburgh Penguins are facing a tough reality: their window to win has likely closed, but they're still holding on to expensive veterans who want to compete.
After another productive season in Pittsburgh, the 34-year-old defenseman is reportedly back in trade discussions. And according to NHL writer Adam Gretz, there's one team that makes more sense than the rest-the Dallas Stars.
The Dallas Stars might be eyeing Erik Karlsson as a bold upgrade to their blue line depth
«They also have one of the NHL's most impressive defensive depth charts down the left side of their defense, and one of the least impressive down the right side. This is a natural match. Especially with Dallas being a bona fide Stanley Cup contender, which should appeal to Karlsson.»
Karlsson posted 11 goals and 42 assists in 82 games last season-not quite his Norris-winning numbers from San Jose, but still top-tier production for his age.
Why a trade for Erik Karlsson could make sense for Dallas Stars, if the price is right
A Karlsson deal would bring high risk due to his contract, but also high reward. He could transform the power play and help the Stars break through in the Western Conference.
But for the Stars to make this happen, they would need to present a trade package that works under the cap.
That could mean including a contract like
Ilya Lyubushkin's for salary relief, and possibly parting with a mid-level prospect or draft pick.
I also think if the Penguins retain salary, Jim Nill should seriously consider the move.
Dallas is close-but close isn't enough anymore.
