Blues announce succession plan, Alexander Steen to become GM in 2026
The St. Louis Blues have announced a succession plan for their management position which will see Doug Armstrong step aside as General Manager in 2026.
On Thursday, the Blues held a press conference to announce that they've signed Doug Armstrong to a contract extension which will keep him as the team's President of Hockey Operations through the 2028-29 season.
However, Armstrong will no longer be the team's General Manager after the 2025-26 campaign as the team says long-time forward Alexander Steen will take over that role. For the next two seasons, Steen will be a special assistant to Doug Armstrong to oversee what it's like to be a General Manager in the National Hockey League.
"The longest-tenured and winningest general manager in Blues history, Armstrong has signed a three-year contract extension to continue leading the club as president of hockey operations through the 2028-29 season. The club has also named Alexander Steen as special assistant to the general manager through the 2025-26 season, after which he will be appointed as the 12th general manager in franchise history." The Blues said.
Steen, 40, appeared in 1,018 career games in the NHL for the Toronto Maple Leafs and St. Louis Blues where he had 622 points (245 goals, 377 assists) and 454 penalty minutes. In 2019 while with the Blues, Steen won the Stanley Cup.
After missing the playoffs in back-to-back years for the first time since 2009-10 and 2010-11, the Blues will look to return to the big dance next spring and will have some big decisions to make regarding their roster this summer.
