Sharks reportedly seeking massive haul for defenceman Mario Ferraro
The San Jose Sharks are going to be an interesting team to watch this summer as they have a lot of money to spend and a willingness to trade some players to upgrade their blueline.
One of those players that the San Jose Sharks are reportedly open to trade this summer is defenceman Mario Ferraro, who was linked with a move away from the Northern California city, but ultimately nothing materialized.
According to David Pagnotta, if the San Jose Sharks do look to move him this summer and are seeking a package, it could include a first round pick, a top prospect and another high asset.
"I am not sure what type of return the Sharks want for Ferraro, but if they go the package route, I would imagine a first-round draft pick is part of the ask, along with a top-ranked prospect and possibly another high asset. And given his attractive cap hit, it's understandable why Grier would hold firm." Pagnotta said.
There's no doubt Ferraro is a solid defenceman and has leadership qualities that could make him a captain in the National Hockey League one day. However, even when considering his cap hit, it's a bit absurd that the Sharks would be able to get a first round pick, a top prospect and another high asset in return for the 25-year-old.
Pagnotta went on to add that among the teams that have expressed interest in Mario Ferraro dating back to before the March 8th trade deadline include Calgary, Carolina, Chicago, Nashville and Toronto.
"The Toronto Maple Leafs, Nashville Predators, Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes and Chicago Blackhawks are among the teams believed to have varying levels of interest in Ferraro, some going back to the middle of the season." Pagnotta said.
Ferraro, a native of Toronto, Ontario appeared in 78 games for the Sharks this season where he put up a new career-high of 21 points (three goals, 18 assists), along with 36 penalty minutes and was a minus-38.
If the Sharks do end up moving Mario Ferraro this summer, which seems like it could happen given the amount of interest in him, don't be surprised if the return is a lot less than a first round pick, a top prospect and another high asset.
