The preliminary round at the 2023 IIHF World Hockey Championship wraps up on Tuesday and it featured a massive game in Group A between the United States and Sweden. The winner of that game would go on to finish first in Group A and play the fourth place team in Group B in the quarterfinals.
During the first period, Tampa Bay Lightning and Team USA forward Michael Eyssimont found himself on the wrong end of a game misconduct. Just seconds after Swedish defenceman Rasmus Sandin shoots the puck out of his own zone, Eyssimont came in and went knee-on-knee with the Washington Capitals blue liner. Sandin was in a lot of pain and left for Sweden's dressing room after the hit.
The officials decided to give Eyssimont a five-minute major for kneeing and a game misconduct, ejecting him from the rest of the game, which is a big loss for the United States' second line.
The IIHF's Disciplinary Panel will certainly have a look at this and with the off-day tomorrow before the quarterfinals begin on Thursday, they'll take their time with reviewing the incident before making a decision on if supplemental discipline is required.
