Insider provides an update on Matthews and Nylander contracts
Maple Leafs fans and others around the league understand that Auston Matthews and William Nylander are both still under contract for the 2023-2024 season, however, to ease the masses it would be ideal for one or both of them to resign a new contract before too long. While we wait, an insider has provided an update on negotiations.
Nylander is nowhere near signing a contract. He and his camp are believed he's asking for $10 million a year while the Maple Leafs are sitting closer to $8.5 million with an 8-year term. Matthews on the other hand is reported to be looking for a deal that doesn't exceed five years and has an AAV of about $13-14 million a season.
It is believed that the Maple Leafs are focusing on Nylander first, then Matthews but a lot of little pieces are required to fall into place to make everything work from a term and numbers standpoint.
One thing is certain, although the offseason is still relatively young, the Maple Leafs have an awful lot of finagling to do, which may involve the likes of Matt Murray and TJ Brodie just to name a couple
