When Luke Schenn was re-acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs at this year's trade deadline, everything felt right. Schenn was returning to the team that drafted him and the fans accepted him as if he'd never left.
While there is interest between Toronto and Schenn to work out a contract extension that would see him stay in Toronto, it appears as though the two sides aren't close on a deal, despite the fact that Schenn wants to stay according to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli

"I think his preference - at least as I understand it - is to re-sign in Toronto." #LeafsForever @TLNdc

However, David Alter of Sports Illustrated the Leafs and Schenn are not close on a deal.
It seems Schenn wants to stay in Toronto if at all possible, but the Leafs can't come to terms with the brooding defender.
The question is: does Schenn wait it out and see if the Leafs have the cap space later on in free agency, or, does he take a shot on the open market?
I'll tell you one thing though, the Leafs need defenders like Schenn, and if they let him walk away in Fred agency, it would be a mistake.
